General Description:

President/CEO will be responsible for promoting the economic and strategic importance of the Rio Grande Valley as a region; provide quality research and technical support to the business community and government entities; continue an aggressive role in the promotion of valley agriculture, education, manufacturing trade and tourism. Candidate will be responsible to the Board of Directors for the overall operations of the Chamber.

Education:

Minimum qualifications require a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Qualifications and Experience:

The President/CEO needs to be a self-starter with civic duties, customer service and public speaking skills;

The position requires a minimum of ten years of proven and successful experience with chambers of commerce or any combination of experience and training deemed as equivalent;

Experience with finance, budgeting, marketing and analytical/statistical skills are necessary;

Position requires computer/technology software knowledge as needed to fulfill the responsibilities of the job;

The President/CEO shall be politically savvy and worthy of the respect of executive and legislative communities on both sides of the political aisle and exercise strategic and visionary thinking about emerging trends and apply them to the RGVP;

Will be responsible for studying legislative issues at all levels of government to determine their effect on the Rio Grande Valley and its business/economic climate;

Oversee the planning of the biannual legislative trip, which will be described during the interview process;

Must possess proven leadership and management abilities; experience working successfully with boards and maintain the respect and confidence of the board, individually and collectively; and be a proven fundraiser within the community.

Specific Duties, Responsibilities and Authority

Develops and maintain relationships with existing members, community organizations, tourism-related businesses, media contacts, and elected officials;

Maintain and serve existing membership base by providing value added opportunities to their bottom line;

New Member Acquisition - The President/CEO will assist the Board in developing programs and events to attract new members consistent with established Chamber policy through:

  • Establishing a personal rapport with potential members through regular calls
  • Conducting a needs assessment of non-members and recommending solutions within the scope of the Chamber
  • Setting goals for acquiring new members and providing a monthly report to the Board on the number and the status of those activities

Assist with the preparation of the annual budget to operate the Chamber; purchase all services and supplies necessary within budgetary limits;

Strengthen the staff through ongoing supervision, mentoring and evaluation of employees;
Maintains a functional office within budget. Position has fiduciary responsibility for budget and financial oversight;

Prepares accurate and timely receipts for all incoming monies;

Must be able to address financing challenges, in the short term and build a strong financial model for the future;

Prepare agendas, appropriate financial reports and other attachments for the monthly board meeting; assist with annual budget;

Works with the Board in identifying fund raising activities or sources of funds for the Chamber;

Coordinate and assists the Board in the design and execution of projects to enhance the community and encourage trade, tourism, and industry in the area;

Attends conferences, seminars and other agency meetings approved by the Board;

Report all public speaking and involvement opportunities with external organizations at each regular board meeting.

Performs other reasonable duties as requested by the Board and/or executive committee.

Communication Skills:

The President/CEO should have the ability to read, analyze and interpret state and federal legislation, financial reports, and legal documents. The President/CEO shall be able to respond to common inquiries or complaints from clients, the public or members of the business community and be able to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Have the ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups and/or boards of directors.

Travel:

The President/CEO is required to travel and participate in activities throughout South Texas, Austin, Washington DC and Mexico and other areas as required to maintain proficiency in fulfilling the responsibilities of the position. Must be able to attend conferences, seminars and other agency meetings approved by the Board.
